One-year study
Full time
Science

Do you want to try different science subjects before deciding what you want to study? Do you need science skills to start engineering studies? Choosing the one-year study program Science, you'll study one or more of the science subjects: Biology, Data science, Physics, Geography, Informatics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Statistics.

This study is taught in Norwegian only. You'll find more information about the program on the Norwegian website.

  • Learning outcomes
The students themselves choose which courses they want to attend at NMBU. The teaching objectives therefore depend on the course combinations chosen by the students. The choice of scientific courses can give a broad basic education, which can serve as a basis for further studies in mathematics and/or natural science at NMBU or other universities and university colleges. The students will learn natural science theory, conceptualisation, and methodology. Practical lab and filed work shall have a central role in certain courses, in addition to the theoretical part. Upon completion, the students should have acquired scientific knowledge and abilities, giving them a basis for further studies. The teaching objective for the students that plan their studies in order to achieve education competence shall be to specialise in the relevant scientific field.
  • Exchange possibilities
  • Program structure

The students are free to choose science or other courses at NMBU. Students who take 60 credits or more, set up their own study plan with the help of a study coordinator. Note: There can be limitations to the number of students accepted to certain courses. Since the programme does not lead to a degree or other qualifications except the competence in the passed courses, there is no formal requirement to the content of the programme. In order to achieve teaching competence, the students must take courses in NMBUs approved course combinations (see a more detailed description of these under the Bachelor`s programme in mathematics/natural science). Certain course combinations worth 60 credits give teaching competence in biology, chemistry, mathematics or physics, while a combination worth 90 credits is required in natural science courses in order to get teaching competence in natural science. The course combinations give a broad background, which is well suited for teaching at upper secondary level. It requires at least 1.5 years of study in order to fulfil a course combination in one discipline.

  • More about the program
    • Societal relevance
Scientific competence is highly demanded by industry, research, development, education and public planning. The programme gives you the opportunity to study elements or scientific areas within biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics/statistics and informatics.
    • Examination
The students` competence is assessed continuously during the programme and through final examinations. Weight is placed on testing understanding, theoretical abilities and decision-making.
